KACF SPONSORED PROJECTS

Kootenai County Team Camp

In June 2005, with the help of our Drug-Free Communities grant through the Department of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), KACF partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of Kootenai County, Camp Fire USA, Kootenai County Justice Services Department, and the State of Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections to provide support and oversight of Team Camp, a six-day educational prevention “boot camp” for adolescents identified as borderline at-risk of substance use (youth who haven’t entered the justice system but are on the edge of it).  Partnering organizations staffed the camp and law enforcement participated in the workshops during the six days.

This program, which originally started (and continues) in Lewiston, Idaho nine years ago, has been designed so participating youth will experience activities that build positive personal characteristics, teach discipline, increase self-esteem, instill a strong sense of self, as well as build positive relationships with authority figures. Youth are also given the opportunity to participate in follow up activities that include mentoring by local military members, scholarships to local colleges (North Idaho College and Lewis-Clark State College), among other identified opportunities that will strengthen protective factors and keep them out of the court system.

With space for 20 participants ages 13 to 17, youth are referred by school counselors at the high schools in Kootenai County, as well as organizations serving disadvantaged kids and the local Diversion Program.

As a sponsored program of KACF and our Communities That Care® best-practice process, pre– and post-program surveys are given to all Team Camp participants following the CTC guidelines.  The survey results and evaluation for the 2006 Team Camp will be posted to the website when they are available.

Team Camp will continue as an annual program with no cost for the youth who attend.   Information for the 2nd Annual Team Camp in June of 2007 will be posted after the first of the year.  Please check back!

In a recent study, teens gave parents a C– in preventing kids from using drugs.

These kids often say their parents don’t talk with them about drugs.

Where are your teens between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.?

Kids don’t  just use substances at school; it is during this critical time that trouble happens.
